Industrial Control Systems Threats

These guides will highlight the urgent need to change how control systems integrators—particularly those without a strong focus on cybersecurity—access and install their equipment. A significant knowledge gap often exists between systems integrators, who are responsible for programming PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems, and their IT counterparts, especially when deploying new or updated systems in manufacturing environments.

Most integrators lack the training or security-oriented mindset necessary to implement well-secured systems. Their primary concern tends to be ensuring remote access to control devices like HMIs, which allows them to provide faster support and reduce the need for costly on-site visits. While this convenience benefits both the integrator and the customer, it often comes at the expense of proper security practices.

This approach has left many unprotected controls system devices wide open on the Internet available to anyone who would wish to misuse them.  These systems can include critical infrastructure, school systems, manufacturing facilities, car washes, etc.
